変化する機会を見つけて成長し続ける(An 87 Year Old College Student Named Rose)

FBで教えて貰った心温まるお話です。 高校教科書の題材なんですね(こちらに単語等の詳しい解説があります)。

An 87 Year Old College Student Named Rose

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know.
I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.

I turned round to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.
She said, “Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?”
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.
“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked.
She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids…”
“No seriously,” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake.

We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went.
She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students.
She was living it up.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium.
As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor.

Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said,
“I’m sorry I’m so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I’ll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.”
As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.
There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success.
You have to laugh and find humor every day.
You’ve got to have a dream.
When you lose your dreams, you die.
We have so many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it!
There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.
If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old.
If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight.

Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability.
The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change.
Have no regrets.
The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do.
The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”
She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Rose.”

She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.
At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.
One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

87歳の大学生、彼女の名はローズ。
初めての講義の際、担当教授は自身の自己紹介の後で学生達に「ここでは全く新しい付き合いを見つけるように」と言ったが、その瞬間誰かの手が私の肩に優しく置かれ、私は思わずあたりを見回しながら立ち上がってしまった。
後ろを振り返るとそこには皺くちゃの小さな老女がまるで彼女のこれまでの人生を象徴するような笑顔で私に微笑んでいた。
「ねぇ、男前な君、私はローズって言うの。87歳よ。ハグしてもいいかしら？」
私は笑いながらも勢い込んで答えた、「もちろんですとも！」。
すると彼女は私を大袈裟に抱きしめた。
(私が冗談ぽく)「ところであなたは、何故そんなに若く幼いうちから大学で勉強されているのですか？」と聞くと
彼女はふざけて「お金持ちの相手を見つけて結婚したいの。子供は二人欲しいわ」、と答えて来たので
「いえ、ホントのところが知りたいんですが」と聞き直した。
実際のところ何が彼女をそうさせてこの年齢で大学に入ったのかに、私はひどく興味をそそられたのだ。
「私はずっと大学で勉強する事に憧れていてね、やっとそれが今叶ったわ」と彼女は答える。
授業が終わると我々は学生組合の建屋まで歩き、一緒にチョコレートミルクシェーキを飲んだ。
あっと言う間に友人になった。
その後三ヵ月間毎日のように授業が終わると我々は飽きる事なく話し続けたものだ。
彼女の知恵や経験を分けてもらえるこのひと時の「タイムマシン」が私は本当に楽しみだった。
その年の授業を通じて彼女はもはや大学のアイドル並の人気で、どこへ行ってもすぐに友人が出来た。
彼女はいつも注目を浴びて着飾るのが好きで、他の学生から与えられるベストドレッサーの称号を欲しいままにしていたし、彼女自身も心からそれを楽しんでいた。
学期の終わりにフットボール試合後の宴会があり、彼女にスピーチさせようと招いた事がある。
その時の彼女の話が今も忘れられない。

司会者に紹介され、演台に向かい用意したスピーチを始めようとした瞬間に彼女は原稿を床に落としてしまった。
悔しそうに、ちょっと困惑しながらマイクに向かって屈んだ彼女は
「ごめんなさいね、私アガリ症だから。ビールは飲まずに我慢したのに、きっとウィスキー飲んじゃったせいだわ。ちゃんとスピーチ出来そうもないので、私の思っている事を話します」とだけ言った。
聴衆の笑い声の中、彼女は咳払いの後にこう続けた。
「私たちはね、歳を取ったから何かをやめるんじゃなくて、やめてしまうから歳を取るの。若くいるための秘訣は４つだけよ。
いつも楽しくしていること、そして成功に向けて努力すること。
毎日楽しい事を見つけて笑いなさい。
夢は持たなきゃだめ。
夢を失くした瞬間に人間は死ぬの。
私たちの周りには死体が沢山歩いてる、自分が死んでいる事すら気づかない人達がね。
歳を取るのと、成長するのは全然違うこと。
もしもあなたが19歳で、何もせずに1年間ずっとベッドで寝ていたら、20歳になるでしょうね。
私だって何もしなきゃ、同じように88歳になるわ。ほっといても歳は取るの。
歳とるのに才能も脳能力も要らないわ。
大事なのは日々の変化の中でいつも何かしらチャンスを見つけて成長すること。
後悔なんて無いわね。
歳取って後悔する事と言えば、何かをした事じゃなくて、むしろ何もしなかった事に対する後悔だと思うの。
死を恐れるのは後悔している人達だけ。」
最後に彼女は我々を励ますために「The Rose」を歌ってスピーチを締めくくった。
そして歌詞をよく理解して自分の日々の生活に活かすようにとも言った。

その年の終わりにローズは数年前に受講し始めた全ての単位を終了した。
そして卒業して1週間後に、彼女は亡くなった。
なりたい自分になるのに遅すぎるなんて事はないという事を自身の人生で示してくれた彼女の葬儀には、彼女に魅了された2000人以上の学生が参列した。

いいお話ではあるのですが、水をさすようでごめんなさい。
この写真のかたは、ローズではありません。
写真の女性は、Nola Ochs（ノラ・オークス）という人で、2007年５月12日に95歳で大学（ Fort Hays State University）を卒業し、ギネスブックにも載っています。(1911/11/22生まれ）　名前で検索すると、写真がたくさんでてきますよ。記事もたくさんあります。
21歳の孫、アレクサンドラ・オークスと一緒に大学を卒業したそうです。98歳で修士課程に進学（卒業？）したという人です。

高校の教科書にまで載っているのですか？ちゃと真実か検証しているのでしょうか。ただ、話自体はとても感動的ないい話なので、若い人たちには向いている話だと思います。(´∀｀)
